The vision required pioneering structural expressionism to give every single spectator an uncompromised view.

In the mid-1950s, Sweden was preparing to host the world’s biggest football tournament. Gothenburg needed a state-of-the-art arena that could transcend traditional, boxy stadium designs. The city announced an architectural competition for a multi-purpose venue capable of hosting everything from football and world-class athletics to speedway and ice-skating.

The winning design came from Fritz Jaenecke (a German-born Swedish modernist) and Sten Samuelsson (a visionary Swedish architect). Their design was a radical departure from convention: an open-air bowl characterized by towering, 52-meter concrete pylons and dynamically sloping north and south stands. This unique silhouette gave the stadium its famous “giant open wave” aesthetic.

The defining challenge of Nya Ullevi was a mathematical and structural puzzle: how to build a massive stadium roof and seating bowl without columns blocking the views of the fans? Its design proved remarkably reactive.

In 1985, during a legendary Bruce Springsteen concert, the synchronized jumping of 64,000 fans created a rhythmic resonance with the clay soil underneath the stadium, nearly causing structural failure. Because of its unique modular design, engineers were later able to easily retrofit and strengthen the foundations without destroying the stadium’s classic look.

Today, the venue stands as the largest outdoor arena in the Nordic region. It seamlessly scales from hosting 43,000 football fans to over 75,000 concertgoers, a testament to the timeless genius of Jaenecke and Samuelsson.

Several prominent English football clubs have played at the Nya Ullevi stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden, spanning both high-profile competitive fixtures and pre-season friendlies:

Manchester United: Played a competitive UEFA Champions League group stage match against IFK Göteborg at Nya Ullevi in November 1994 (losing 3–1).
